Project Overview
Breheny Civil Engineering is delivering improvements to the Badsell Road (B2017) and Maidstone Road (B2160) junction on behalf of Kent County Council.
The scheme will support the growth of Paddock Wood as three nearby housing developments bring around 1,000 new homes to the area, while increasing junction capacity, helping to ease congestion and improving the way people travel through and around the junction.
What's changing?
🚗 Increased junction capacity
Badsell Road will be realigned and widened to provide two approach lanes at the Maidstone Road junction, helping accommodate future traffic growth and improve traffic flow.
🚶 Better walking and cycling connections
Existing walking and cycling routes will be improved, including a widened footway along Badsell Road, a new shared footway and cycle route connecting to the new housing development and Public Right of Way WT268, and improvements along Maidstone Road.
🚦 Improved crossings and traffic signals
New traffic signals will be introduced at the junction, alongside improved pedestrian crossing facilities and a new crossing on Badsell Road.
💧 Enhanced drainage and flood management
New flood mitigation basins and an underground storage area will help manage water flow and support the long-term resilience of the area.
🌳 New landscaping and planting
The completed scheme will include new landscaping and tree planting, helping to enhance the local environment and replace trees affected by the works.
When is the work happening?
Construction is programmed to begin on 7 September 2026, with completion expected in late Spring 2027.
How will we minimise disruption?
Some temporary traffic management will be needed while we construct the improvements, including lane closures and, at certain stages, road closures. These measures allow us to carry out the works safely within a busy and constrained junction.
We'll plan each phase carefully, making the best possible use of any closures by coordinating activities and completing as much work as practicable while traffic management is in place. This approach will help us minimise the duration and frequency of closures and avoid unnecessary disruption wherever possible.
We'll keep local residents, businesses and road users informed throughout the works, with regular progress updates and advance notice of significant traffic management changes.
The Badsell Road Improvement Scheme is moving into its construction phase, with initial pre-commencement activities starting in September before the main works get underway. This first newsletter introduces the scheme, explains the improvements planned and sets out how we’ll keep stakeholders updated as construction progresses.
